Activating Hikvision Devices with SADP: Typical Workflow

A step-by-step pattern for first boot: discovery in SADP, activation gates, and recording the management IP for your NVR or VMS.

Activation is the bridge between factory state and a camera that accepts your security baseline. While exact menus shift by firmware era, the pattern is stable: discover the device in SADP while it shares a broadcast domain with your laptop, complete the activation wizard, assign or confirm network details, and immediately replace default passwords with secrets stored in your vault.

Preparation checklist

  1. Laptop wired into the same switch as the camera, or on the same VLAN if your design allows discovery.
  2. Disable aggressive VPN clients that force all traffic through a tunnel; they often hide local subnets.
  3. Download SADP from Hikvision’s HiTools page, not a USB stick of unknown origin.

After activation

Document serial, MAC, firmware build, and management IP in your CMDB. Point browsers or VMS channels at the new IP only after TLS or firewall rules match your security policy. If activation fails mid-flight, power-cycle once, confirm PoE budget, and re-scan in SADP before opening a vendor ticket.
