VLANs and SADP: Why Discovery Fails Across Segments
Broadcast boundaries explained: when you need a router helper, temporary access ports, or mirrored PC VLANs.
Discovery traffic is typically not routable the way HTTP is. If your laptop sits on VLAN 10 and cameras live on VLAN 30 with no helper, SADP may show zero devices even though the NVR records perfectly. Fixes include temporary trunked laptop ports, jump boxes, or switch features that proxy discovery (vendor-specific).
Design-time mitigation
Some enterprises provision a staging VLAN where technicians run SADP, then move devices to secure segments afterward. Document the exact steps so activations stay repeatable.
Wi-Fi caveats
Consumer mesh Wi-Fi often isolates clients. Use wired Ethernet for provisioning whenever possible.
