NTP, Time Zones, and Why Recording Timestamps Matter
Before blaming VMS gaps, verify Stratum sources, firewall rules, and DST policies—time drift breaks investigations.
Accurate timestamps tie card access, ANPR, and video together. If cameras sync to different sources, incident reconstruction becomes a nightmare. Configure NTP to redundant internal stratum servers or vendor-approved pools, not a single consumer router.
Firewall paths
Allow UDP 123 (and any modern alternatives your standard uses) from the CCTV VLAN to the time source. Blocked NTP often fails silently for days.
Documentation
Record the configured timezone versus UTC expectations for SOC teams. DST jumps should be tested annually.
