PoE Switch Basics Before Running SADP on a New Install
Budget PoE classes, LLDP surprises, and why a camera that powers on might still be invisible on the data VLAN.
Power and data are coupled but not identical. A camera drawing PoE may boot its sensor stack while its Ethernet VLAN assignment still blocks discovery from your laptop. Confirm the switch port is access to the CCTV VLAN, trunked appropriately, and not shutdown for security quarantine.
PoE budget math
Add per-device wattage with headroom; IR cut, heaters, and PTZ spikes exceed nameplate averages. If the switch browns out, cameras reboot randomly and SADP scans look flaky.
Cable quality
Marginal copper can pass link lights yet drop multicast discovery. If SADP is intermittent, swap patch leads and re-terminate before blaming firmware.
